I would say when the appreciation is insincere? No, fuck that. Appreciation sucks when it's expected by someone; like it's required. But then again, it also sucks when you do something for someone and they don't appreciate it.
You know Davis...great fucking idea. Let's do away with appreciation. Can we act unconditionally? Do something [good] for someone without thought of reward?
Maybe not. Because if you act unconditionally without thought of reward, you also do so without thought of punishment. Given the limited information we have about the outside world, it's impossible to consistently assess the goodness of your actions. So I guess appreciation is really just a "second opinion" of the goodness of your actions.
And maybe we should treat it as such. Instead of requiring appreciation, we should look at it as a critique; and realize that even if we mean well, we don't always do well. What was the question again?
