the top ten highlights of baseball are all the same: guy runs, guy catches ball [sometimes at a weird angle, but often duplicated multiple times in the same day], guy hits ball traveling at high speed [against some odds and expectations], and so on. i mean. okay reasons why it should be a sport:
its a game with one team versus another team.
its physically demanding.
theres strategy involved.
it cant be played by everyone on a professional level.
there's steroids involved. uhm. what else... i dunno.
you know what, the things that constitute a sport arrrree not worth enumerating cuz theyre so flexible anyway. who cares. baseball sucks. its slow, its arduous, and the season is so long its half about who can simply stay standing through the 120+ games. and hooray for the world series that doesnt include the rest of the world where there are teams that could legitimately beat the winners of said series. the highlights are boring 90% of the time. the games are way too long and most of the fun is in the beer and hotdogs served at the game. the statistics are bogus [the first left handed batter to hit a double in the 7th inning against a pitcher who's only been in the league for 6 months and started only two games in the minor league and is under the age of 30 but over the age of 25] it sucks. as a sport.
as a past time it rocks. its something to do every other day. its an excuse to get together with friends and rivals. its something to talk about and argue about [bogus statistics included]. its not too taxing to play with friends or too complicated. its fun to watch [you can come and go as you please, you probably wont miss much and what you do miss will probably be on sports center later if it was worth seeing at all.] and while the world series isn't fixed in any way it is more or less entertaining and who wouldn't pass on a chance to feel some pride for a town you care about. its also nice to see people struggle. it works as a metaphor for life too so thats nice. pepper up your perspective with some baseball allegory and shit.
so, you know, not saying its worthless. its pretty damn important for its own reasons, but one of those reasons should not be that its a sport. a sport it is not.
